It’s my first visit, so we decided to try out the Signature dish Shunde Plate Fish, RM98 (opening promo price). The Fish plate comes with prawns, clams, golden needle mushrooms, beancurd skin, calamari and vegetables.
According to Lokmy Facebook page, in order to maintain the most authentic taste, ingredients is the most pertinent issue. Their fish is served directly from the farm without any antibiotic, hormone and muddy smell. After reading more about the restaurant on their Facebook page, it looks like Lokmy aims to promote healthy eating and Shunde district in Guangdong Province of China also known as gastronomy city by UNESCO, however, in the menu, it looks like they serve a mixture of Shunde, Vietnamese and Malaysian cuisine.
Shunde cuisine is famous for its delicacies characterised by their nutritional value and preparation. The combination of inventive cooking methods, creative ways of presentation and outstanding flavours, make the city’s cuisine truly exceptional.
The chefs in the city pay special attention to retaining the ingredients’ flavours and cook with attractive colours, fragrances and tastes that can be described as “light, fresh, crispy, tender, smooth and genuine”. As Shunde is famous for its agricultural products, hence milk and fish are always the main core ingredients.
Personally, I would probably prefer the Spicy Sour soup instead of clear soup. Although in terms of fragrance, the clear soup based brings a hint of sweetness and refreshing taste, it was rather unique, but a little oomph to my taste buds would be good. Price wise, currently there’s a promo which I find it as affordable, however, for 3-4 pax having this dish at a normal price of RM128 it’s kind of pricey, while for 4-5 pax is priced at RM139.
We ordered the Barbeque Chicken Wings (4pcs), RM12 it was a good starter while we wait for our Shunde Plate Fish to be cooked.
After reading some good reviews of their dessert, we decided to try it out ourselves. We ordered their signature desserts the Shunde Double Skin Milk, RM5.90 and Durian Double Skin Milk, RM13.90.
双皮奶 (double-skin milk) is a lighter and healthier version of your average pudding. Translated from Cantonese, it literally means “double skin milk”. This delicious dessert is rumoured to have beautifying effects. It is famously known to have two layers of milk skin on the surface, each layer having its own unique characteristics: the top is fragrant and sweet, the second tender and smooth.
Originating in Guangdong’s Shunde (Gastronomy City by UNESCO) in the late Qing Dynasty (1616-1911), the dessert spread across the nation largely due to that creamy, milky taste. 双皮奶 (double-skin milk), was created by cattle farmer constantly on the lookout for a way to preserve milk; so, they turned to boiling it, which discovered caused a thin layer of skin floating on top of the milk to form, giving rise to the original recipe’s name.
After reading its history, I’m totally amazed and although I had this when I was a kid, it’s so soft and smooth it just slides right into your mouth and melting away with a sweet note. For Durian lovers, you can opt for the Durian Double Skin Milk however, it’s a little disappointing when the double skin milk doesn’t contain any Durian in it.
Have you tried any Shunde cusine before? If so, do share with me where you’ve tried it before and was it good?
